Yes, the number of vehicles in operation worldwide is about 1.10 billion-units . Of these around 255 million are in the U.S. alone. But holding the U.S alone responsible for the entire 'climate change' is not a wise proposition.
In fact who ever breathes, he/she pollutes. If we go by this idea the combined population of China,India, Pakistan and Bangladesh alone will be close to half of the world's population. The great scientists and climate change debaters forget the biggest polluters of the planet. They forget conveniently the severe stress that is caused to the planet earth on its water resources, land resources and so on. More people means more food production and more fertilizers and pesticides for the paddy fields. More people means more dresses and which may require the production of clothes which again require lot of factories in operation and chemicals. Again the shelters for all which require cement, steel and other materials.
Just because the vehicles are visible and they are on the roads, we can't brush aside the pollution and stress caused by the developing countries. The argument 'you became industrialized much earlier" won't help. In fact every one on this earth is responsible for the present status. Holding developed nations (the West) alone answerable with the active assistance of the intellectuals will be nice to hear and read. But the problem will not get solved.
Let the discussion be realistic and truthful. No need to debate with any pre-conceived notions. And these most populated nations which spend huge sums for their defense budgets should not expect the UN or other agencies for funds perennially.
