'SAVE NATURE' CAMPAIGNS ARE AS OLD AS 'NATURE' ITSELF

"To  her fair works did Nature link
The human soul that through me ran;
And much it grieved my heart to think
What man has made of man."
-Visionary Poet William Wordsworth

"The world its course maintains through life that rain unfailing gives;
Thus rain is known the true ambrosial food of all that lives."

(By the continuance of rain the world is preserved in existence; it is therefore worthy to be called ambrosia.)

If clouds, that promised rain, deceive, and in the sky remain, Famine, sore torment, stalks o'er earth's vast ocean-girdled plain.

(If the cloud, withholding rain, deceive (our hopes) hunger will long distress the sea-girt spacious world.)

If clouds their wealth of waters fail on earth to pour, The ploughers plough with oxen's sturdy team no more.

(If the abundance of wealth imparting rain diminish, the labour of the plough (till) must cease.)

If from the clouds no drops of rain are shed. 'Tis rare to see green herb lift up its head.

     (If no drop falls from the clouds, not even the green blade of grass will be seen.)
If clouds restrain their gifts and grant no rain, The treasures fail in ocean's wide domain.

(Even the wealth of the wide sea will be diminished, if the cloud that has drawn (its waters) up gives them not back again (in rain).)

If heavens grow dry, with feast and offering never more, Will men on earth the heavenly ones adore.

(If the heaven dries up, neither yearly festivals, nor daily worship will be offered in this world, to the celestials.)

When water fails, functions of nature cease, you say; Thus when rain fails, no men can walk in 'duty's ordered way'.

(If it be said that the duties of life cannot be discharged by any person without water, so without rain there cannot be the flowing of water.)

If heaven its watery treasures ceases to dispense, Through the wide world cease gifts, and deeds of 'penitence'.

(If rain fall not, penance and alms-deeds will not dwell within this spacious world.)
"The base resemble men in outward form, I ween;
But counterpart exact to them I've never seen."
     -Poet Tiruvalluvar

NATURE IS A CURE

Do this. Do that. Prescriptions lead to boredom. How long one will listen to the talk of polythene! Instead positive reinforcement. How the visionaries could foresee the future and warned us centuries back and how did they enjoy nature. Let us have a glimpse.

A Character

I marvel how Nature could ever find space
For so many strange contrasts in one human face:
There's thought and no thought, and there's paleness and bloom
And bustle and sluggishness, pleasure and gloom.

There's weakness, and strength both redundant and vain;
Such strength as, if ever affliction and pain
Could pierce through a temper that's soft to disease,
Would be rational peace--a philosopher's ease.

There's indifference, alike when he fails or succeeds,
And attention full ten times as much as there needs;
Pride where there's no envy, there's so much of joy;
And mildness, and spirit both forward and coy.

There's freedom, and sometimes a diffident stare
Of shame scarcely seeming to know that she's there,
There's virtue, the title it surely may claim,
Yet wants heaven knows what to be worthy the name.

This picture from nature may seem to depart,
Yet the Man would at once run away with your heart;
And I for five centuries right gladly would be
Such an odd such a kind happy creature as he.

VIOLENCE BY ANIMALS UNAVOIDABLE - BUT NOT BY MAN.

Go green campaigns can't be restricted to possible seeds sowing and planting. The world which spends around 15-20% of its GDP on military and warfare wants to test these weapons of destruction on real life situations. Innumerable  are the ways of militaries  spoiling  the environment. The simple guns spit bullets which eliminate millions around the world which includes our wild life. He is kind enough to manufacture weapons out of every branch of science-mechanical, chemical,biological and so on. He is spoiling the land, water, and space without any let up. Thousands of acres of fresh green forests are decimated to house these units. The warfare and ammunition are in real terms anti-green.   The heads of states have immense faith in the number of heads of nuclear missiles than their heads. The garland  of bullets (magazines)  worn by our army men clearly show we worship the God of death more than the god of life.
 Hence stressing peace is  also among the agenda of environmentalists.

EVERY TIME , A CROWD CAN'T  ALWAYS BE ACCEPTED AS  THE VOICE OF  OF DEMOCRACY

We can't bury the future of  any  land or its people for the sake of politics. Politicians- the good rules  and the bad ruins -not much of a difference.
Don't involve kids in your campaigns- a human right/child right violation

LET US LIVE IN THE WORLD FOR SOME MORE TIME NOT LEAVE....

MAN HOLES ARE NOT FOR MEN. DON'T FALL INTO DEATH TRAPS

If Man wants to escape  death he should not have taken birth. At the same time he should not die like a little insect for petty things and sheer ignorance as Shakespeare laments in his King Lear, "As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods;
          They kill us for their sport."

Countless number of people  are getting killed in absolutely   avoidable circumstances. One such circumstance is physically entering into man holes to clear sludge/blocks without wearing any safety gear. When a machine can be used for the purpose, people are taking risks and  make their lives vulnerable and leave untold sufferings for their kids  and spouses. The second such common but avoidable act is getting into a sump/ well for various purposes. In both the cases precious lives are lost due to the presence of poisonous gases like methane,hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen oxide  and the electronic media is happy that they get their news time with a 'sensational news' and the press with a 'moving story' and every one neglecting the reasons for such sad stories that occur in our cities with unfailing regularity.

If simple precautions are taken before venturing such activities, these tragedies can be avoided. But to create an awareness on this most important issue I have neither space nor any reach among the masses. However if my suggestion reaches a single person and percolates down below and saves a life down the ages anywhere in the world today or tomorrow the spent by me wouldn't go waste.

Do's and 'Don'ts.

1. Never enter a 'manhole' at any cost even with safety gears. Use  Suction machines instead.

2. Never enter a well used/unused/closed/kept open- any type without testing it for the presence of  any poisonous gas
3. Don't drink and then enter a well or manhole as you can not sense the gas immediate.
4. Go for 'bio-gas plants' and help save environment and save lives.
5. In case of  emergency take all the precautions (complete safety gear with oxygen masks, goggles,gum boots,helmet) and enter the well informing the local fire service, neighbours, volunteers and ensure in the vicinity that 'this assignment is on'. This is to help fight any emergency as most of the times one person enters the man hole , after seeing him not return for some time. Panicked he too gets down to save and gets trapped.
6. In case of closed/unused wells  down a bucket with a burning camphor and the camphor burns without any flicker means 'safe'. Test this many times before entering any such deep wells.
7. If the camphor stops burning there is poisonous gas without any doubt. Keep open the well/sump for a day and then test and continue your work.
8. It is not the presence of poisonous gas alone that chokes but the less amount of oxygen available for breathing is also a factor.
9. This simple test can be undertaken before entering any well/sump.
10. Help save families.

Two cleaning well die of asphyxiation

TNN Apr 23, 2013, 04.01AM IST
CHENNAI: Two men cleaning a well in a hotel at Thousand Lights died of asphyxiation early on Monday morning. The two workers are suspected to have inhaled some toxic gas in the closed well. The water in the well was used to clean utensils. Police said Robert, 37, a construction labourer of Kannigapuram in Vysarpadi, and Sekar, 46, a painter of Perambur came to Hotel Neelam along with workers Ravi and Jagadesan. Robert first entered the 30-ft-deep well after opening the iron hatch. When he did not come out for a long time, Sekar grew anxious and entered the well and he too swooned, police said.

Metrowater worker, engineer asphyxiated in manhole

Despite a Supreme Court order against manual cleaning of manholes, a contract worker on duty for Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) in Perambur died of asphyxiation in the small hours of Wednesday. A Junior Engineer of the department who attempted to rescue him also fell into the manhole and died. Police said the worker did not have necessary safe equipment.

GREEN CAMPAIGNS ARE NOT NEW-Gandhi's Views On Environment

Five Elements of Nature
Gandhiji drew attention to the pitiable condition of the V labourers working in factories, in Indian Opinion on 5-5-1906:
"Nowadays, there is an increasing appreciation among enlightened men of the need for open air. Where large cities have come into being, labourers have to work cooped up in factories the whole day. As the price of urban land is high, factory buildings are not spacious enough, and the tenements of labourers are also very small. This invariably results in a steady deterioration of their health. Dr. Newman of Hinsborough in London has shown that the death rate per thousand is 38 in areas where too many people live huddled together in one room, but where the same number live in two rooms, the death rate is 22; where the same number of people share three rooms, it is 11 and where they have the use of four rooms, the death rate is only 5. There is nothing surprising in this. A man can do without food for several days and live a day altogether without water, but it is impossible to carry on without air even for a minute. If a thing that is so very vital to life is not pure, the result cannot but be deleterious. It was for these considerations that large manufacturers like Cadbury Brothers and Lever Brothers, who have always been very mindful of the welfare of their workers, have shifted their factories to open places outside cities. They have built very good quarters for their workers with all the attendant amenities, such as gardens and libraries; although they have spent all this money, they have flourished in their business. A similar movement has spread all over England in the wake of this example.
"This matter deserves consideration by Indian leaders. We suffer much because we do not realise the value of pure air; and this again is a strong reason why diseases like plague spread among us."
* * *
Gandhiji pointed out in Indian Opinion dated 1-2~1913, the irony of the situation that one has to pay a price even to get pure air:
"We have seen something of the structure of the body and have learnt that it requires three kinds of nourishment: air, water and food. Of these, air is the most essential. Consequently, Nature has provided it to such extent that we can have it at no cost. But modern civilization has put a price even on air. In these times, one has to go off to distant places to take the air, and this costs money. It is at Matheran that residents of Bombay can get fresh air and only then does their health improve. In Bombay itself, if one can live on Malabar Hill, the air is much better. But one must have money to do this. If Durbanites want fresh air, they have to go to live in Berea. That again means expense. It would not, therefore, be quite true to say in modem times that 'air is free'.
"Whether air is free or has to be paid for, we cannot carry on without it for a moment"
* * *
In a speech at Ahmedabad meeting on 1-1-1918, Gandhiji explained the importance of purity of air, water and food:
"Air, water and grains are the three chief kinds of food. Air is free to all, but, if it is polluted, it harms our health. Doctors say that bad air is more harmful than bad water. Inhalation of bad air is harmful by itself and this is the reason we [sometimes] need change of air. Next comes water. We are generally very careless about it. If we were to be sufficiently careful about air, water and food, the plague would never make its appearance among us."
* * *
"I have seen thousands of men and women dirtying the banks of the Ganga at Hardwar. Pilgrims defecate at the very spot where people sit, wash their faces, etc., in the Ganga and then again fill their pots at the very same spot. I have come across pilgrims defiling lakes in the same manner at places of pilgrimage. In doing this we destroy the dharma of compassion and disregard our duty to society.
"Such recklessness leads to pollution of air and water. Is it surprising then that cholera, typhoid and other infectious diseases follow as a result of this?" (Shikshan ane Sahitya, 22-9-1929)
* * *
Gandhiji emphasized the importance of pure air and pointed out the gifts bestowed by nature to mankind on 31-8-1942:
"The atmospheric air around us is not always pure, neither is it the same in every country. The choice of the country does not always lie in our hands but the choice of a suitable house in a suitable locality does rest with us to some extent. The general rule should be to live in locality which is not too congested and insist upon the house being well-lighted and well-ventilated. . . Nature has provided us with sufficient reserve of vitality. But for that, man would have long ago disappeared from the face of the earth because of his own mistakes and transgressions of the rules of health.
"We must see that the air that we breathe in is fresh. It is good to cultivate the habit of sleeping in the open under the stars."
* * *
In a speech at prayer meeting on 24-3-1946 at Uruli Kanchan, Gandhiji suggested to sleep in the open to get fresh air:
"The most essential of these is air. Man can live without food for several weeks, without water for some time, but without air he cannot live for more than a few minutes. God has, therefore made air universally available. Shortages of food or water there may be at times but of air never. Inspite of it we foolishly deprive ourselves of God's blessings of fresh and pure air by sleeping within doors with doors and windows shut. One may Shut doors and windows, if he is afraid of thieves at night. But should one shut oneself up?
"To get fresh air, one must sleep in the open. But it is no good sleeping in the open only to breathe dust and dirt-Iaden air. The place where you sleep must be free from both.
"Anyone who fouls the air by spitting about carelessly, throwing refuse and rubbish or otherwise dirtying the ground, sins against man and nature."
* * *
At a prayer meeting on 21-4-1946, Gandhiji told how " water is harmful to our health:
"Will any of you care to bathe or wash your clothes in gutter water? Yet many of the small tanks where people bathe and wash and even drink from are no cleaner than the gutter. Nature is lenient. It often does not punish us for our sins immediately. Thus we can go on breathing impure air and inking impure water over long periods without any dramatic ill effects. But there is not the slightest doubt that such a thing lowers the vitality and makes one fall an easy prey to disease."
* * *
In a letter to a foreign naturopath on 28-5-1947, Gandhiji affirmed his strong faith in nature cure, that is healing by air, water, earth and light:
"You will be pleased to know that I became a confirmed convert to nature cure when I read Kuhne's New Science of Healing and Just's Return to Nature over forty years ago. I must ,confess that I have not been able fully to follow the meaning of . 'return to nature' not because of want of will but because of my ignorance. I am now trying to evolve a system of nature cure suited to the millions of India's poor I try to confine myself to the propagation of such cure as is derivable from the use of earth, water, light, air and the great void. This naturally leads man to know that the sovereign cure of all ills is the recitation from the heart of the name of God whom some millions here know by the name of Rama and the other millions by the name of Allah. Such recitation from the heart carries with it the obligation to recognize and follow the laws which nature has ordained for man. This train of reasoning leads one to the conclusion that prevention is better than cure. Therefore, one is irresistibly driven to inculcating the laws of hygiene, i.e., of cleanliness of the mind, of the body and of one's surroundings."

VISIONARIES' VIEWS ON NATURE

"The first man who, having fenced in a piece of land, said "This is mine," and found people naïve enough to believe him, that man was the true founder of civil society. From how many crimes, wars, and murders, from how many horrors and misfortunes might not any one have saved mankind, by pulling up the stakes, or filling up the ditch, and crying to his fellows: Beware of listening to this impostor; you are undone if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody."

— Jean-Jacques Rousseau

The world is too much with us; late and soon, getting and spending, we lay waste our powers: Little we see in Nature that is ours.
William Wordsworth

GO FOR E-CONFERENCES

Whenever people  attend big conferences the things that attract them are the reception, accommodation and food. The travel to a distant place and the excitement preceding the trip add to the enthusiasm.  the deliberations hardly attract  and have any impact on the audience. The reason for this perennial failures are understandable. Normally in such conferences about a thousand and more delegates are attending in a big air-conditioned hall. At least a few scores would be moving in and moving out.   Rarely  the intended messages are reaching the concerned in such conferences.  People take  a few days to acclimatize to  the new environs and suddenly to switch over to serious learning mode is difficult for most of them.

No accountability
None is going to test the learning  that had taken place and assess it objectively.
Mostly these are voluntary and if it involves serious management or scientific researches printed copies are issued to every delegate.  In such a scenario only it is suggested that e-conferences using video/audio tele-chats are preferable to  regular cost-intensive, water-energy- pollution intensive conferences.

People fly long distances for attending such cosmetic meetings spending huge amount of fossil fuel. (air-  ) It happens even to the environment conferences every year. I'm not against travels undertaken by individuals or groups. The dislike is against spending much gaining very little.

GREEN IDEAS ARE FOR IMPLEMENTATION

Just in the previous post I mentioned that we can do away with the lawns which are water intensive to maintain and yields nothing apart from the Oxygen gain and providing an aesthetic value. But growing vegetables and fruits in place of costly lawns would do more good to the environs and to the health of the people around. Leave alone the economic benefits. Grass roots are on the surface of the soil and are wide spread. Hence  frequent watering is essential. Though we all have installed fountains, the water is wasted without any doubt. In the similar manner we can do away with the decorative trees which stand majestically yielding nothing. Let us go for fruit bearing trees instead.

The next suggestion is appealing to the rich and the poor  to give up the idea of 'big will live in a big house' . The days of monarchy and lords are over. These are the days of democracy. No need to declare one's wealth nakedly by building a massive concrete structure. In India there are house of ' modern maharajas' who live in such huge bungalows wasting precious power and water.

EYES NEVER DEMAND LAWNS

NO NEED OF LAWNS WHEN THE EARTH IS FORLORN

In any big hotel or a big corporate entity building huge space is reserved for lawns. Fresh water or recycled one is used to keep the lawns alive. I'm not having any plan against lawns and flower gardens. But a good amount of space can be allotted to growing vegetables that suit the soil and climate. None will become sad to see a tomato plant carrying ripe red tomatoes or beautiful orange carrots with their stems intact. In fact they can sell to their own customers as fresh-organic vegetables and fruits. This would become an income to the hotels/business house. The guests or the employees who regularly taste fresh vegetables would become healthier too.  For the spade work and watering  volunteers from the  guests/employees can be drawn. Nowadays everyone loves to do such work and it would be easier for the large establishments to maintain such productive greenery in their premises. As of now in every hotel they simply transport every 'waste' to the municipal landfills. No need here after. Go for bio-mass power generation using the bio-degradable waste generated from the establishment  and generate power from the human waste generated in the premises to power your own establishment. Human waste or bio-waste if stored for 18 days and more it can give you green gas. Sell the residual as fertilizer. Let us build the world together. Instead of roof gardens go for again growing vegetables. Gift the guests with plants and not with plastic rich /paper intensive books.

For sustainability of this earth if we all can join we can make it.
