MAN VS ANIMALS

green footsteps

As the human population expands through the world, it increasingly encroaches on animal habitats. This does not only affect wild animals, but our own domestic pets and livestock as well. Below are listed  green projects, both great and small, that anyone can undertake in order to help animals.

We hear almost daily news about wild animals entering human settlements. We seldom think that we the humans have encroached their area. We believe strongly that the earth belongs to the humans alone. To eliminate all wild life in the world with the lovable weapons he has amassed hardly a few days are sufficient.  Hundreds of elephants, millions of dogs get crushed by trains and motor vehicles every year in India alone.

1.Wildlife Crossings
Habitat Fragmentation occurs when roads, railroads, pipelines, or canals interfere with a wildlife habitat.Wildlife crossings are man-made structures that are designed specifically to allow animal life to traverse these dangerous intersections safely. The crossings can take the form of underpass tunnels, overpasses, or culverts. Hundreds have been built throughout Europe and they have proven very effective. Lobby for  Wildlife Crossings in your area.
2. Go for Bat Houses
Just one bat can consume between 500-1,100 mosquitos in a single night. They are an important part of any eco-system, and giving them a home on your property benefits bats and humans, alike. The box is simply a nest for bats, resembling a birdhouse with a large opening on its underside. Bat boxes can be ordered pre-built, or if you wish to construct it yourself, directions are readily available online. Once built, the box can be installed anywhere on your property, as long as it is high enough from the ground to thwart predators.
3.  Make your home Habitat friendly
If you live adjacent to a wild area, make sure that your home is not inviting to wildlife. Secure all trash lids, feed your pets inside, and use humane methods of repelling nuisance animals, like motion activated alarms and sprinklers. Build a wooden or chain link fence to keep your pets in, and wild animals out. Many people don’t realize that their homes draw in wildlife around them, which can cause them to wander on to busy streets, or into people’s yards where they can hurt themselves or endanger human lives. Do yourself and the animals a favor by deterring any wildlife visitors.

4. Be Prepared for a disaster
While there are a lot of things to consider during a disaster, we often don’t think about animals, and pets. Thousands of pets became homeless or died during Hurricanes/floods. Prepare in advance and plan an emergency kit, escape route, and a method of evacuation that is suitable for your animal. If you want to turn this into a bigger project, you can get a few families or even the community together to make these kits in order to prepare them for helping their animals survive in an emergency.
5. Our actions can have a tremendous impact on animal lives. Undertaking some or all of these projects can prove to be of great benefit to them. There are plenty of fun projects in your community that you and your family can get involved in that will benefit your own animals, as well as animals in the wild. Use your imagination to start your own animal-friendly project that will help the wildlife of your area, as well as the environment.
