Uttarakhand floods: Epidemic looms as people complain of fever, diarrhoea

The fear of an epidemic outbreak in flood-ravaged areas of Uttarakhand may be turning into reality as hundreds of people from local villages reported to medical camps set up by the forces complaining of fever, diarrhoea and vomiting. At least 128 people reported high temperature and gastro-intestinal infections in Ramnagar — a tiny village near Guptkashi in Kedarnath valley — through Monday and Tuesday. Three ITBP men engaged in rescue work in Kedarnath have also reported sick.

Authorities are now suspecting contamination of water resources in the area due to hundreds of decaying bodies spread across the valley.

Although medical camps set up by ITBP, NDRF and armed forces are already helping victims with medicines, the Centre is sending a high-level team comprising doctors and specialists to Uttarakhand to review public health measures.

Though the situation is not being seen by the government as alarming as no outbreak of water/air borne or direct contact diseases has been reported so far, cases of diarrhoea in areas such as Alwalpur (Haridwar), Udvi (Uuttakashi) and Chandrapuri (Rudraprayag) have been brought to the notice of local medical support teams. The government, however, claims to have managed them at "incipient stage" after picking up early warning signals.

Though 120 people are reported dead so far from the "Himalayan Tsunami" in Uttarakhand, officials say they expect the death toll to eventually hit the thousands. Many parts of the state where people are stranded remain inaccessible. 65,000 people are waiting to be rescued. VIP's have already visited and compensations were announced for the surviving. But why should we die and lose?  "Uttarakhand toll may be in thousands, over 70,000 still missing" Only in India this can happen. Why this is  so? Heckling the CM is not the answer. A single man with hardly a year in office can't do much. We  all are responsible for this pause. Let us join together to help the suffering today and later build an Uttarakhand that can with stand more powerful natural furies.

Yes the nature's fury was ferocious. But can't we minimize the casualties and the damages to men and materials? The hunger for money and comforts make men to climb up the mountains and explore distant and high lands. If exploitation is unavoidable it should be wise and not wide. Indiscrimiate use and abuse of natural resources are the reasons for the rising casualties.
