It's not that man alone works hard to earn his food. Animals too. They have to walk hundreds of miles in search of green grass and at times have to cross swelling rivers. Yes, the weak lings would hesitate. The shepherds would be carrying them on their shoulders. The lesson we learn... if we are united we can cross any rivers or oceans of trouble.
