Delhi and Democracy

Over 1.33 crore electorate will decide the fate of 673 candidates in the fray for the Delhi Assembly elections. The elections were held today.

Indian media proudly declare that  they serve the common man. They claim that they serve the poor. But the truth is somewhere else. Out of this 673 candidates 210 are from the major political parties. They have got power, money and campaign machinery. The remaining 463 candidates are from smaller political parties and independents.  In each of these 70 constituency at least one independent or other candidate may be there with more credentials than his co-contestants and may be in a position deliver better. But none in the country- the mighty media have not published even one candidates' name  for the benefit of the public to choose a right person of their choice.

All of them talk about the 3 major party candidates endlessly. The state owned media is also not an exception.  The chief minister has to be elected after the election of MLA's. But the media has proposed 3 names and have concluded one for the post long back. Every debate and every article and report do talk  only about those 3 parties. Then what fairness we can ensure? The independent candidates names are not known to the public. None cares to disseminate information about them.

How can we strengthen democracy if we are not going to stand by the poor and the neglected? The 'ruling' is meant for political parties mean what is the necessity to have the provision to allow independents to contest.  Is it not the duty of the mass media to tell the public about  all candidates who are contesting. If the media is deciding  and limiting the contest in favor of one or two political parties what is the use of the provision allowing ordinary men to  contest in elections? Just to collect some deposit money?

Also here the election of the CM is not direct and he or she is just another candidate. Only the party that has got a simple majority (minimum) is invited by the constitutional head of the state/UT to form a government and  the Legislature members elect their leader and request the Governor/accept the invitation to form a government. But here the media projects someone as the CM candidate and such contestants derive undue advantage in the electoral field.

If we want Democracy to be strengthened the media should publish all the contestants with   their names, photos, credentials  and  leave big parties to fend themselves. They can conduct interviews and organize Debates  among all the contestants  of the constituency. The media should help voters to identify genuine and honest candidates and not blindly promote a few political parties and their agenda. The media should come out of this bias and highlight all candidates with equal coverage.  Till  such date what we do may not have complete sanctity as for as democracy is concerned. I didn't notice/watch a single  debate  in which an  independent candidate participated.

As this is the trend across the nation why not we ban the participation of individuals and smaller parties in elections? At least some expenditure would come down while preparing ballot papers or related documents.
