Today is Sunday and a casual walk in the early morning reveals to me that almost 50% of the households do not wake up at 6 a.m. and the outer lamps continue to burn till 8 or 9 a.m and in some more throughout the day.
Here only we need technology that takes our electric lamps off at dawn. Similarly a good number of street lamps continue to light our roads even during mid day. As I drive up I notice at least 10-15 kilometers of my 35 kilometers travel street lamps greeting me.
Yet another thing I notice is the unlimited use of power the rich. Since they are capable of paying they consume more. Though the energy tariff is fixed upward depending upon the consumption it is a simple money for them and the rich consume power like hungry dogs. I read in newspapers the rich install AC Machines even in their bathrooms and washrooms. There were 25 machines at one home in Delhi. I appeal to the government to collect rupees 20 per unit from the rich and save electricity boards. Those who earn 10 lakhs and above per month can pay more. Similarly gas pricing and fuel pricing can be dual or multiple depending upon the income levels of individuals.
It is simply foolish and ironic that a poor farmer and the Ambani or Adani or Jindal get a liter of Petrol for the same 70 rupees. People may talk of equality. Are these rich ready to adopt the same lifestyles of the poor in their dressing and food habits ? No.
Need of the Hour
Ban people buying flats/ plots indiscriminately, immediately
Let the government fix the size of individual dwellings
Ban bike/car/boat races
Go for dual/multiple pricing and need based
Collect at least a minimum tax from farmers for their energy use
Give big incentives for the families which go for single child
Instead of searching for more energy solutions it is better we go for minimizing our energy needs.
