Power Shut Down/ Load Shedding/ Tamil Nadu stares at long power cuts ... are the headlines that appear quite often now. The total demand per day is around 10,000 MW, while supply amounts to only 9,000 MW. The demand at times peak to 11,500 MW and the power managers plunge into crisis.
In democratic India everything is politics. From birth to death every where you can see the tinge political parties' flag colours. The horns of bulls, their straddles, the houses, the names of their kids ...everywhere politics. Hence , a genuine issue like the power demand is also highly politicized here.
But the fact is none bothers about the excess use of carbon in the thermal stations and the dangers of the nuclear power which demands huge investments and a threatening presence always. The consumers or the common man and the politicians want 'power' at any cost .. of course different powers.
Tips to minimize the use of electricity:
Simply reduce your usage by 50%
Every room doesn't need illumination when they are not in use
Switch off your refrigerators for two hours a day in half an hour spells
Switch off your TV's and all other e- equipments when not in use
True. You have money to pay. But the nature has no power to match your demands
Power crisis is not restricted to your country and it is there everywhere
Reduce your comforts for a while and believe there are millions who have not seen the facilities you enjoy
Coal is a dwindling stock and on mining they disappear and they grow everyday
Go for your own plants for your needs.
Customize a windmill, bio-gas plant and a solar panel to meet your household or office needs
Too much dependence on this power has to be slowly reduced
It is common to see shops use a lot of bulbs/lights to keep their shops decorated and realize there is no need of it
In big offices don't switch on all tubes and fans on your entry. Let each officer learn to use them on his own
AC machines are the power consuming monsters and whenever possible open your windows to get fresh air
Don't make your living rooms into darkrooms and then brighten them up
